What is the state of Education today?

Today most students in the world don’t have access to decent teachers and schools. Those who do are stuck with a “one-size-fits-all” education system that is focused on creating test takers and not critical thinkers. It doesn’t make sense, for example to:

  • Force each child through the same curriculum
  • Teach a concept in the same way to all students
  • Give them the same set of homework problems to practice

Education is still stuck in the post industrial-revolution format and is yet to see a fundamental disruption in the post-internet and AI-revolution era.

What is the Future of Education?

The Internet has fundamentally changed the idea of a Library. Now everyone has access to this repository of human knowledge.

The Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have fundamentally changed the idea of a classroom. Now every child can learn from a great teacher through these courses.

The Adaptive Testing platforms with digitized question banks have fundamentally changed the idea of test taking. Now a personalized test that adapts with child’s performance is possible.

The Teaching Machines will fundamentally change the idea of one-on-one tutoring - the most effective, but the least scalable way of teaching. Now every child will have access to a personal tutor app that can hand hold the child through his/her journey of learning at his/her pace.

What is a Teaching Machine?

  • Understanding - A Teaching Machine should be able to interpret formulae, text, images, and diagrams the way humans do. They should be able to “read”, “see”, and “understand” a problem, decipher what is given, what is asked, and what background knowledge is assumed in the context of the problem.
  • Thinking - A Teaching Machine should be able to consume, represent, and explore the “knowledge” it is given to discover one or more solutions to the problem. It should be able to differentiate a “good” solution from a “bad” solution and eventually become “smarter” at problem solving with more practice.
  • Personalization - A Teaching Machine should be able to assess at a very fine grained level what a student knows, predict what s/he is ready to learn next, what is the best content to show to this student based on his/her learning style, and what sequence of problems the student should practice so s/he learns the concept most efficiently.
  • Communication - A Teaching Machine should be able to have a conversation with the student beyond just question answers, it should also be able to recognize any form of nonverbal, implicit communication such as emotions and gestures to address the emotional, motivational, and intellectual aspects of the learning process.

Has 20 Year of exposure in IT business development, Infrastructure development and held several management roles in firms like KPMG, Deloitte, Intel and others. He has managed project which had revenue in the range of 500 million and above. His main skill set is to turn around projects and make them profitable. He has worked closely with State of Texas department of education to understand the needs of schools and children while working on implementing a product for the State govt. His passion toward education and new technologies brought drive him to start this AI company.

Has over eighteen years of experience in applying and innovating Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, and Deep Learning algorithms to hard prediction problems in a variety of domains. He also serves as a visiting faculty of Machine Learning at IIIT-Hyderabad and Indian School of Business.
